After Kachra Chowk (garbage crossing), Millennium City is all set to get an Anaath (orphan) road. Corporate executives in Sector 18, who have long suffered the broken Sahraul Road, will assemble this Thursday to inaugurate the re-christened road.
The 2.5-km road has not been maintained since 2003. On Monday, just 180 metres of it is metalled.
The executives will also perform a yajna (fire sacrifice) to formalise the re-naming of the road.
While the ceremony is clearly aimed at drawing attention and heaping shame on the administration, it is by no means a token protest.
Executives told HT they would appeal to their employees to boycott the Lok Sabha elections, as a mark of protest.
A decision to this effect was taken in a meeting of the representatives of companies situated along the road.
As highlighted by HT on April 5, neither Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) nor Public Works Department (PWD) and Haryana State Infrastructure and Industrial Development Corporation (HSIIDC) are willing to assume responsibility of the road.
“The road is used by more than a lakh employees of about 100 companies. During monsoon, the road turns into a stream of water, making commuting impossible. We have decided to appeal to our employees to boycott the coming election,” said Inder Mohan Puri, managing director of an export house.

Hamvir Singh, General Manager, HSIIDC admitted the Corporation had built Sahraul Road in a day, in 1992, as an important delegation from UK had to visit Gurgaon. “Otherwise, this road does not belong to our department at all, as it falls in HUDA’s Sector 18 and actually belongs to PWD. We constructed it overnight because of the UK delegation, as a special gesture after we received instructions from the government,” said Singh.
