The news came as a respite for thousands of fans waiting with eagerness for the last league fixture to be held in the city, especially when the Supreme Court also allowed seating on the three stalls that had been sealed on the corporation’s orders.

The knockout phase of T20 tournaments has been shifted out of Chennai after Sri Lankan players were banned by the state government from playing in Tamil Nadu, but uncertainty also hovered over the Tuesday’s fixture.

In its ruling, the court said there were prima facie grounds for organising the match in the stadium and found no substance in the arguments against cancelling the structural stability licence granted by the PWD department.

The government had objected saying the nomenclature in the stands was different from the plans submitted to the corporation. The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association had also contended that it had not been informed before it was served the notice by the government.
