Eleven people, including a five-year-old girl, were killed and 17 others injured when a mini-van crashed into a luxury bus on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway on Monday.

Police officials said six men and four women were also among the dead.

A family was travelling from Mumbai to Surat in a mini-van when its driver lost control and hit the divider. The vehicle then crossed to the other side of the road and collided with a private bus travelling from Gujarat to Mumbai, officials said.

The accident occurred at 4 am in Palghar district, police said.

Police are investigating whether the mini-van’s driver slept off at the wheel or whether the accident was caused by a mechanical error.
