Injured during the operation to flush out terrorists from the Taj hotel in Mumbai on Thursday night, Unnikrishnan passed away on Friday morning. “We can’t believe this... He succumbed to his injuries this morning, we’ve been told,” said an inconsolable Ashok Kumar, his uncle.

Maj Unnikrishnan’s father retired from the Indian Space Research Organisation and lives in Bangalore.

A brilliant student, Unnikrishnan was commissioned in the army in 1999. Posted with the Gujarat Regiment, he was on deputation with the National Security Guard.
