Malaysia's southernmost state of Johor has been hit by massive floods, resulting in several landslides and the mass evacuation of around 10,000 people to relief centres around the state, reports said on Wednesday.
Continuous rainfall on Tuesday caused almost all districts in the state to be immersed in floods, dubbed one of the worst in a century, said state Chief Minister Abdul Ghani Othman.
The rising waters have forced the evacuation of around 10,000 people to temporary shelters. No deaths or injuries have been reported so far, said Abdul Ghani.
"The rains are expected to continue until Friday as the northeast monsoon brings showers to central Johor. This phenomenon is unusual," he was quoted as saying by the official Bernama news agency.
Water levels of four rivers have risen to the danger mark and torrential rain has caused nine major landslides, prompting the army to prepare 20 boats and a helicopter for rescue efforts as well as to deliver food and clothing to the affected areas.
Every year, tens of thousands of people are forced to leave their homes during the rainy season and move into temporary shelters due to floods.
