In South Dinajpur, water level of the Punarbhava, Tangan and the Atrei rose alarmingly submerging adjoining areas, District Magistrate S K Paul said today.

Several areas of Kumarganj, Gangarampur, Balurghat, Tapan and Bunidpur were flooded as a result, he said.

In Tapan block, six families were shifted to safer places, he said.

In Malda, the swollen Mahananda and the Fulohar inundated some villages under Mahanandatolla and Pillaimari gram panchayats, Additional District Magistrate P N Sarkar said.

Two hundred families were evacuated and moved to safer places under Mahanandatolla and Pillaimari grampanchayats in Ratua Block I, the ADM said.

Erosion has taken place along the embankment in a four and half square km area under Pilaimari gram panchayat in Malda.

The Mahanda and the Fulohar, meanwhile, continued to rise steadily with yellow signal hoisted in both the cases.

Control rooms have been opened in all district headquarters to monitor the situation.
