The Maldives government has stepped up diplomatic drive to defuse international outrage triggered by a video that show a holidaying Swiss couple being insulted in one of the country’s resort islands.

On Saturday, President Mohamed Nasheed personally apologised to the couple. In a telephone call, Nasheed told the couple that “the entire country is deeply saddened and sorry for what has happened.”

On Friday, Nasheed had expressed “disgust” at the incident.
