Malls and more at BEST depots

The loss-making transport department of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking plans to be financially independent in the next two years, reports Sujit Mahamulkar.

The loss-making transport department of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking plans to be financially independent in the next two years. BEST has plans to build shopping malls, medical centres, restaurants, entertainment centres in its 23 BEST stations and make profit of Rs 400 crores in a year.

The electricity supply department, which is in profit, helps to carry on the transport service.

Uttam Khobragade, general manager of the undertaking said, “We are taking some measures like commercialisation of bus stations above 3,000 sq mtr in size. Out of 200 bus stations, 23 will be used. The bus depot will remain as it is, and the construction will take place above the ground level.”
