Police sources said Rajnish Kumar, 35, a licenced stamp vendor, was on his way to Ghaziabad tehsil on his motorcycle.

He was also carrying a bag containing Rs 5 lakh.

On reaching Jain temple crossing in the Kavi Nagar locality, Kumar was reportedly chased by two motorcycle-borne youth.

“The two robbers snatched my bag and sped towards the railway crossing. I chased them and they fired shots to scare me. I managed to corner them near the railway crossing and after a brief scuffle, I snatched my bag and their pistol,” Kumar told Hindustan Times.

The two alleged robbers fled from the spot.

In recognition of his courageous act, Kumar was rewarded Rs 5,000 by senior superintendent of police (SSP) Raghubir Lal.

A case was later registered at the Kavi Nagar police station against the two robbers for attempt to murder and loot.

Meanwhile, the pistol snatched by Kumar contained five live cartridges.
