Kumar, who lives in west Delhi, stabbed a youth to death on October 29, 2009 and walked to the nearest police station, carrying the murder weapon. Police said Kumar was drunk when he killed the sleeping youth.

Kumar was desperate to get back to prison to escape the taunts of friends and relatives. According to the prosecution, he was released on March 28, 2009 and had planned to live with his relatives.

But none was ready to let Kumar stay because of his criminal record. He shifted to a juice shop, but didn't find acceptance.

In May, a Delhi court spared Kumar the gallows and punished him with life imprisonment, hoping he would eventually be reformed.

"I don't feel the convict cannot be reformed or rehabilitated. Long incarceration in jail would definitely transform him into a law-abiding citizen," said additional sessions judge Vijay Kumar Dahiya.
