The deceased, Laxman Waghela, a Goregaon resident fell off while spitting out paan masala, said the police.

Waghela sustained serious internal and external injuries to his head after he fell off, the police said.

“While leaning over, his head hit an electric pole that stood along the tracks,” said Police Sub-Inspector S.K. Baghe of the railway police.

However, a commuter who was in the same compartment at the time of the incident told Hindustan Times that the deceased
had ‘leapt off’.

“He was standing in the gangway. He moved to the door and jumped out,” said the commuter who did not wish to be identified.

The railway police took Waghela to Cooper Hospital, where he was declared dead before admission. The case was transferred to Borivli railway police station.

A bachelor, Waghela lived with his parents and brother.
