A man arrested on Friday for murdering a woman was remanded in five-day police custody on Saturday, after the police failed to recover the body from the place identified by him.
Police said the accused, Babain village resident Jabbar Singh, confessed after he was arrested on Friday on suspicion of abducting the victim.
Jabbar had been in a relationship with Nirmal Kaur of the same village, and they had eloped around eight months ago, following which Jabbar was arrested. However, the matter was hushed up following a compromise between the two families.
Later, Nirmal started working in a thread factory at Lalru, but suddenly disappeared with one Paramjit Kaur on July 17. While Paramjit later married Devraj of Ambala, Nirmal remained missing.
Nirmal's parents filed a complaint of abduction on July 29.
While police was treating the case as one of elopement, after his arrest, Jabbar confessed to having killed Nirmal in a rage after she started harassing him. He admitted that he had buried her on the bank of the village pond.
After the arrest, a team led by deputy superintendent of police (headquarters) went to the spot and searched till late night, but could not find the body.
