Angry with his wife, a 30-year-old man tried to beat his three daughters to death in Haryana’s Jhajjar district. One of them, a four-year-old, died. Two others are battling for life.

On Monday night, Mukesh, first tried to hang the children from the ceiling at his home in Bahujhorli village. Then he beat them with a heavy stick, the police said. While Jiya died, Payal, 7 and Varsha, 2, were admitted to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences. Doctors said their condition was stable.

Mukesh, who was arrested on Tuesday, is reportedly unemployed and an alcoholic. The police said he often fought with his wife, Suman, 27. Last week, the woman left home and went to live with her parents in Rewari district. She took the three children along.

But on Monday morning, Suman reportedly went home to Bahujhorli. Leaving her daughters there, she returned to Rewari. This angered Mukesh and he went to Rewari to bring back Suman. But she refused to oblige.

Mukesh returned home and attacked his daughters, the police said. He then informed his father Om Prakash and other relatives that he had “killed” the girls, and asked them to dispose of the bodies.

Om Prakash, 59, a labourer, and the other relatives took the children to the Dadri civil hospital in Bhiwani town.

But it was too late to save Jiya. Payal and Varsha were given first aid and referred to the PGIMS.

Om Prakash said the family had long disowned Mukesh as he was a “habitual drinker”.

“Mukesh was arrested on Tuesday under Section 302 of IPC,” said Patram Singh, superintendent of police, Jhajjar.
