The ambitious outdoor surveillance system (OSS) project, under which over 200 high-tech CCTV cameras were to be installed in the city, has been hanging fire for the last five years.

This, despite, the state government having had sanctioned a budget in 2007 for the installation of CCTVs at crucial places, including the MG Road and Gurgaon expressway.

This project, besides helping the traffic cops in managing traffic, would have played a role in combating crime in the city.

"This would have helped the police in investigations too," said a police officer.

The police launched another project - 3rdEye - to track down traffic violators. But for the success of the project, the department needs adequate manpower.

The department virtually turned a new leaf by opening an account on Facebook and asking people to post photos of traffic violators.

However, this is also has not yet caught the imagination of the public at large.

"We are working on many projects to improve the traffic situation in the city. We are in touch with the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon, Huda and other agencies. We are in constant touch with many companies who can play a crucial role to ease the traffic movement," said KK Sindhu, the Gurgaon police commissioner.
