The incident occurred when a police team, which was on a combing operation, was attacked by the Naxals, police said.

The security men retaliated, causing the death of the Maoist, they said.

Police suspect that some other ultras were also injured in the firing but managed to escape.

A 3.3 rifle and one AK-47 rifle were recovered from the scene, an official said.
