Tagged as the ‘Satta Parivartan Election Rally’, the season’s first political event addressed by the party chief turned out to be a grand spectacle for the Meo-dominated region.

Maya’s helicopter, interestingly, was a major crowd puller in itself, especially considering the area’s fondness for choppers.

Contesting elections on all the 10 seats in Haryana, the BSP has fielded a Meo leader and two-time MLA Jakir Hussein from the Gurgaon parliamentary constituency.

Experts believe the Meo factor — with the Meo community accounting for 2.75 lakh votes out of the total 12.30 lakh — will play a major role in deciding the final result.

During her one-hour stay in Nuh, Mayawati read from a written speech and sought votes on behalf of the BSP candidate. The Utter Pradesh chief minister criticised the opposition parties with special focus on the Congress and the BJP for the “deteriorating social and financial condition of the people of the scheduled, backwards and other classes as well as minorities”. She also held these parties responsible for the “worsening condition of the poor people of the upper castes”.

“The poverty led many to turn Naxals, while others were forced to involve in illegal activities. But our party forms the government with the support of party workers and not the capitalists. Therefore, we work for the welfare of the people,” Mayawati said.
