KOTWALI POLICE lodged an FIR against the newly elected mayor of Varanasi Kaushlendra Singh and several others here today. The case was registered on a complaint by the district hospital administration for his alleged involvement in rampage, disruption in official work and theft of medical equipment on the premises of the hospital on Tuesday.

The case was lodged under section 143,332,353, 323,427 and 379. Police investigation is on.

Two groups of students belonging to Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha (SCS) had clashed during the nomination process of the Harish Chandra Post-Graduate College students’ union on Tuesday. The ABVP candidate for president’s post Shailendra Pandey and two others, including a student leader of Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth (MGKV) Neeraj Singh, had been injured in the ruckus. Rampaging students had damaged vehicles and public property in and outside the hospital to protest against the attack on the student leaders. Reacting sharply to the FIR, the mayor said the people of Varanasi would give a befitting reply to it. Describing the case as politically motivated, he said the demand for action against the sub-inspector, who beat up a student black and blue, was not met by the administration. However, an inquiry, headed by a DSP, has been set up to find out the truth. The FIR against the first citizen of Varanasi was allegedly lodged without any investigation.

The case has not been lodged against Kaushlendra Singh, as an individual, but against the mayor, he alleged. Singh claimed no case of this kind had ever been lodged against any mayor in the country. Meanwhile, some youths burnt the effigy of the district administration in Durgakund area.
