MCD resumes sealing drive in Delhi

The MCD today resumed sealing of shops in residential areas of the capital after a gap of over three months, targeting mainly hazardous and polluting units, amidst protests from the traders.The MCD personnel were taking action against commercial establishments in residential areas in six of the civic zones so far and focusing on hazardous and polluting trades as also activities like retailing of building material, automobile and cycle-rickshaw repair shops, liquor vends, officials said.The areas targeted included Rama Road, New Rajinder Nagar, East of Kailash, Pang Nagar, Kailash Kunj, Zumrudpur, Punjabi Bagh, G T Road, Bahajanpura, Model Town, Civil Lines, Piragarhi and Nangloi.The civic body is sparing till September 15 the establishments whose owners have filed affidavits for voluntarily closing them. The deadline for sealing banquet halls functioning in residential areas has been extended till September seven.Confusion prevailed on the trades that would be targetted in the posh A and B categories of colonies in view of the Urban Development Ministry's proposal on not allowing mixed land use in such areas.MCD officials were meeting to chalk out an action plan for these colonies.Meanwhile, the traders, opposing the High Court-ordered sealing drive, took to the streets, shouting anti-government slogans.The traders also decided to move Supreme Court in the matter.
