Chief minister Sheila Dikshit, who is the chairperson of Delhi Jal Board (DJB), has rubbished the claim.

But as a "precautionary measure" the chairman of the MCD's education committee has directed students of all its 1,361 primary schools across Delhi to carry their own drinking water from home.

"All these schools have water purifiers but we don't want to take chances. If the contamination level is high, water purifiers may not be enough to make it totally fit for consumption," said Mahender Nagpal, chairman of the civic body's education committee.

However, Nagpal admitted that in 50 of the 1361 schools, purifiers need repair. And this is the BJP-led MCD's job.

The BJP leader said he has also written to Sheila Dikshit asking that water to 36 MCD schools, which have no water connection, be supplied through DJB tankers. In view of reports of contamination, he has also urged the government to ensure regular cleaning of DJB tankers.
