AFTER AN enthusiastic and unified pitch made against reservation in the form of a ‘maha rally’ only yesterday, cracks began to show in the rank and file of the agitators today, even as the JDA continued the strike for the tenth day.
While a gold medal returning programme was held at the Mahatma Gandhi Medical (MGM) College, undergraduate students of the medical college fought over petty issues between day scholars and hostellers and various organisations supporting the cause blew their own trumpet while singing different tunes. Moreover, after the administration slapped a case regarding yesterday’s rally against Indian Medical Association (IMA), the office-bearers remained unavailable for comments today.
Over 25 merit holders of the MGM College returned their gold medals earned via their ability and talent before a photograph of President APJ Abdul Kalam at a function held on the college premises. The medals would be sent to the President along with a letter stating that these were uselessness when people were allowed into seats of learning not on the basis of merit, but on caste.
Prominent amongst those who returned the awards included 1968 batch gold medallist and current Superintendent of Maharaja Yeshwant Rao Hospital (MYH) Dr D K Jain, 1970 batch urologist Dr Apurva Puranik, 1982 batch general surgeon Dr Brijesh Lahoti, 1993 batch pathologist Dr Arvind Shukla and 1998 batch State Junior Doctors Association (JDA) representative Dr Mohit Bhandari.

Various organisations have started bickering amongst themselves and factionalism seems to reign supreme. The Brahmin Samaj has made many tall promises achieving which would be a test of time. The Kshatriya Samaj would come out on the issue during their rally being organised on Maharana Pratap Jayanti on May 30. The Khandelwal Samaj has announced forming a human chain carrying a 50-ft mock snake depicting reservation at Regal Square tomorrow.
The administration, which had shown a soft corner towards the protesters participating in yesterday’s rally, woke up to the High Court’s order banning marches during traffic hours on MG Road. The police, acting on the behest of the administration, registered a case under Section 188 against the functionaries of the IMA and has sent notices to other participating organisations. No IMA functionary was available for comment.
