Meghalaya has more non-worker population: Report

Non-workers numbering 13,48,676 comprised 58.16 per cent of the total populace.

Meghalaya has more non-workers, which include students and pensioners than workers, according to the 2001 census report.

Workers comprising both the 'main' (who worked throughout the year) and 'marginal' (who worked only for a period of the year) were altogether put at 9,70,146 which constituted 41.8 per cent of Meghalaya's total population of 23,18,822.

While, non-workers numbering 13,48,676 comprised 58.16 per cent of the total populace.

The number of main workers in Meghalaya, as per the census was 7,57,011 which was 78 per cent of the total workers' strength where as only 21.97 per cent or 2,13,135 persons were counted as marginal workers, the census data which was distributed in seminar on Friday said.

Among the category of workers both main and marginal, the census data showed a maximum of 48.14 per cent or 4,67,010 persons belonged to cultivators, 17.7 per cent totalling 1,71,694 persons to agricultural labourers, 21,225 persons or 2.19 per cent were engaged in household work and 31.98 per cent numbering 3,10,217 doing other work.

In the national scenario, a percentage of 39.1 totalling 40,12,89,511 were shown as workers in India as against 60.9 per cent or 62,51,54,029 persons of non-workers.
