To keep male passengers away from coaches reserved for women in Metro trains, the Gurgaon police on Thursday launched a drive to catch violators at Guru Dronacharya Metro station.
Forty women participated in the operation called ‘Operation Majnu’. Activists from an NGO also joined the women constables in the operation.
The police raided women compartments for male intruders. “We want to provide a safe journey to women. We keep getting complaints from them about male passengers sitting in their coach, so we decided to re-launch the drive,” said DCP (traffic) Bharti Arora.
The police caught some male passengers who were travelling in the reserved coaches. The men were fined, and asked to clean the station with a broom. The NGO women also made the male passengers wear bangles.
“We face a lot of harassment when travelling with male passengers in crowded trains. That is why the reserved coaches were introduced in the first place. But despite warnings, some men continue to board such coaches,” said Bharti Raturi, a commuter.
“This step will help women raise their voice. We also want to make them aware that they should object to men who travel in these coaches,” said Veena Gupta, an activist.
But some passengers had a different view. “It’s unfair to punish men by making them wear bangles instead of asking them to pay fine,” said Abhishek, who was travelling in a non-reserved coach.
