A man stated to be mentally retarded was on Saturday kicked and struck with batons up by a policeman after he allegedly stabbed his mother and misbehaved with another woman patient at a hospatal in Dumka, Jharkhand.
Two policemen, deputed to guard 40-year-old Ram Vilas Thakur, pinned him down, kicked and beat him with batons before tying his limbs to bring him under control, Deputy Superintendent of Police Chandan Kumar said after preliminary investigation.
The man, who was under treatment for injuries, suffered a fresh gash in his head following the beating, Kumar said.
Terming him as 'mentally retarded', Kumar said Thakur snatched a pair of scissors and stabbed his mother Katki Devi in her stomach at the Dumka Sadar hospital this morning, forcing the two policemen to swing into action.
The doctors immediately treated Devi, who is now out of danger, Dr Subham Murmu said. But Devi left the hospital without permission of the doctors, he added.
Thakur and one Ravindra Mahato came to blows last night at Dumgaon village near here, injuring each other, the DSP said.
