AMID TIGHT security, as many as 49 candidates have filed their nominations for the students’ union election of Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth (MGKV) here on Thursday. Two girl students have also filed their nominations for the post of president and vice-president. The election is scheduled to be held on September 13.
According to information received from the office of the election officer, the break up of candidates contesting for different posts include, 11 (president), 8 (vice-president), 11 (general secretary), 5 (library secretary) and 14 (faculty representative).
The nomination process began at 10 am and continued till 2 pm in the Humanities faculty.
Students along with their supporters came in form of processions from different parts of city. The supporters were stopped by cops around 200 meters away from the campus. Only candidates were allowed to go inside to file the nomination process.
The process for withdrawal of nomination papers and publication of final list of candidates would be held on Friday.
Elaborate security arrangements had been ensured by the district administration to avoid any untoward incident. Around 350 jawans of police, PAC and Rapid Action Force (RAF) were deployed in and around the campus.
The traffic on the busy Station-Lanka Road had been restricted during the nomination process. Vehicles on way to Sigra, Rathyatra and BHU were diverted to Maldahiya and Sajan crossing. From 10.30 onwards the Sajan-Maldahiya route witnessed a traffic jam for several hours, causing a lot of difficulty to the common people including office goers and schoolchildren.
