Over two weeks after two minor boys allegedly set two children afire on March 17, the Panvel police registered a case of death due to negligence on Friday. The police action followed a report in Hindustan Times on Friday.
While Moti (2) succumbed to the injuries, her brother Dhanraj (4), who was admitted to hospital, is now out of danger.
“We have registered a case of causing death due to negligence,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police PL Sandanshiv. The case has been registered against Kamlesh (name changed).
Dhanraj had said that Kamlesh lit a fire while another boy Ramesh (name changed) had put him and his sister on the handcart that was set afire.
Kamlesh (12) and Ramesh (13) are both residents of Narmada Complex in Panvel where Dhanraj’s father Dali Darji works as a watchman.
“Our investigations have revealed that Kamlesh, who had burnt a mattress coir to dry a puppy, had not put out the fire, which engulfed the two children,” said Sandanshiv, adding that that the police would question the two boys to get more details.
Terming the incident as unfortunate, Navi Mumbai police commissioner Ramrao Wagh said, “The minors, who are alleged to have set the children alight, definitely did not have criminal intentions. It was obviously negligence on their part that led to the incident. We are considering all angles in this case.”

Meanwhile, the families and neighbours of the two boys have denied their involvement, claiming that the boys were not present at the spot when the kids were engulfed in the flames.
