Miramax Films, the producer of Oscar-winner Chicago, has bought the American rights to the Bollywood version of Pride and Prejudice that will star Aishwarya Rai opposite New Zealander Martin Henderson.
Miramax's involvement was almost certain to lead to "an Oscar push" for the film to be made by Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha, said a report in the Guardian newspaper.
Bob and Harvey Weinstein, the brothers who own Miramax, beat off strong competition for the North and South American rights to the film, the report said. The Weinstein brothers are known for the high-profile campaigns they mount to promote movies backed by them at the Oscars.
Chadha's film, titled Bride and Prejudice, is also expected to gain from the musical revival following the success of Chicago and Moulin Rouge.
Her success with Bend It Like Beckham - which reached the U.S. top 10 despite a limited release - has helped raise expectations for the new film, an update of the classic Jane Austen novel.
Bride and Prejudice will be filmed in India, London and Los Angeles and features music by leading Bollywood composer Anu Malik. Chadha has said she plans to turn the classic novel into a "white-hot Bollywood musical version".
Aishwarya Rai, who is on the Cannes jury, and co-star Martin Henderson, who plays Darcy, are expected to be in Cannes this week to promote the film.
