Mirwaiz seeks OIC help in Kashmir

All Parties Hurriyat Conference leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has asked the Organisation of Islamic Countries to step in to ensure that the state's Muslims are not stopped from attending Friday prayer congregations.

All Parties Hurriyat Conference leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has asked the Organisation of Islamic Countries to step in to ensure that the state's Muslims are not stopped from attending Friday prayer congregations.

For the fourth consecutive Friday, no prayers were allowed at the old city's Jamia Masjid, mosques in Srinagar.

Shops, educational institutions, banks and other business establishments remained closed and public transport went off the roads due to government restrictions and separatists' shutdown call.

The Jammu and Kashmir government enforced curfew in several towns and imposed restrictions in Srinagar to forestall the march to the Shah Hamdan shrine.

The hard-line faction of the Hurriyat, led by Sayeed Ali Shah Geelani, had called for the march to offer Friday prayers and stage protests.
