Mahrashtra Navnirman Sena's agitation on the son-of-the-soil issue seems to have been a non-issue.
Days after the state issued a fresh diktat to monitor industries and find out if they reserve 80 per cent of jobs for locals, fresh government statistics indicate it is already being done in Pune district.
Then chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, along with industry minister Ashok Chavan, who is now at the helm of state affairs, had stated that "committees at district- and state-level have been set up to ensure industries employ locals as per the government's directions and take action against units that violate the same".
On December 29, government officials concluded that in across all industries about 80 per cent of workers' jobs and 50 per cent of the supervisory level jobs have gone to locals as prescribed in the 1973 Government Resolution.
"The statistics, provided by the industries themselves, show that the resolution is being followed," said Pramod Satam, general manager of the District Industry Centre. "The situation will be closely followed and discussed in the next meeting scheduled in February."
Besides Satam, who is member-secretary of the state district-level committee, Chandrakant Dalvi, committee chairman and district collector, DP Pagar, additional and labour commissioner and other government officials and industry-body delegates also attended the meeting.
