Meera moved court to seek an anticipatory bail. Her lawyer, Harish Malhotra, contended that the allegations of dowry death did not apply on Meera as a “girlfriend should not be considered a relative.” Malhotra said the offence under Section 304B of the IPC (dowry death) was not made out against Meera as she did not come under the definition of a ‘relative’.

The police had filed a criminal case against Sumit Bhuttan, the deceased’s husband, and had also named Meera in the FIR along with his relatives. The deceased’s relatives had claimed that Sumit had extra-marital relations with Meera. They had even accused him of torturing Ruchi for dowry.
