The 5.9 magnitude quake hit 129 kilometres southwest of Jayapura, the United States geological survey said on its website.

A resident contacted by phone in the city said she had not felt the quake, which was centered deep below the surface of the earth. Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

A massive earthquake and subsequent tsunami on December 26, 2004, killed more than 131,000 people in Indonesia's Aceh province and left half a million homeless.
