Modi feeds fish; gifts Vivekanda book, Gita to Abe

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took part in a ceremonial feeding of fish alongside his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe to kick off his maiden trip to the island nation as PM on Saturday.

Modi, who cut a dapper figure in charcoal-coloured Nehru jacket, and the blue-suited Abe, fed the koi fish, or carp, a tradition thought to bring prosperity and good fortune.

Later, the Indian PM gifted Abe a selection of Swami Vivekananda’s work focused on Japan. The book, Swami Vivekananda and Japan, had been specially commissioned and brought from Kolkata.

He also gave Abe a copy of the Bhagavad Gita.
