Gurgaon topper Abhilasha Sharma, who emerged like a dark horse, has proved that students from rural background and from 'not so popular schools' can also excel.

Sharma bagged the top position in the entire NCR region, scoring 97.8% marks in Class 12 (Commerce). She fought many odds. She does not have a separate room to study, does not have a guide and does not have refresher books of renowned authors.

She only had a dream and she knew how to give shape to her dreams.

“My family has limited salary. Sometimes I was not in a position to buy books, so I used to write all the notes to save money,” she said.

In order to support her studies, Abhilasha gave tuitions and earned Rs 2,000 per month. Of this, she used to pay her school van fees and sometimes buy books.

“We don’t have a domestic help. As my father has not been keeping well and my mother is busy helping him, I cooked and washed dishes too. But money is not what is required to score well, or to give reality to dreams. It is determination and hard work.”
