Some of the professionals who had been barred from working out of residential areas notified within the mixed land use category, may soon get a breather.

The Urban Development Ministry is currently going through the recommendations of the committee it constituted to review the list of professional activities that can be allowed in those residential areas.

The panel has said that 12 more professional activities can be added to the existing list. They can be permitted to function from basements of residential homes, provided the basement is taken into account while computing the floor area ratio.

The ministry's September 7 notification allows only doctors, lawyers, CAs and architects to operate from residential areas.

The panel submitted its report to the ministry about a fortnight ago. It has recommended that engineers, valuers, software professionals and tax consultants, town planners, surveyors, arbitrators, company secretaries, cost and work accountants, designers (fashion, graphic and interior), management consultants and journalists should also be allowed to have offices in the specified residential areas.
