The purpose was to carry Virendra Bhatia from the varsity campus to file his nomination for Rajya Sabha. But, the task could be done by an ambulance from a private hospital. Bhatia after his successful hip replacement (surface replacement arthoplasty) surgery on March 7 is recuperating at KGMU’s private ward in the department of orthopaedics.

He has been advised to avoid even sitting posture for a few days. Since he was supposed to file nomination for Rajya Sabha, special arrangement were done by doctors of orthopaedics department.

A critical ambulance along with doctors of orthopaedics department and medical superintendent of Gandhi Memorial and Allied Hospitals was supposed to carry Bhatia to his destination and back again to KGMU.

As per schedule supporters of Bhatia reached the campus with placards and gathered outside the superintendent office. But at the last moment the ambulance got defunct.

Doctors finally had to arrange ambulance from a private hospital, which took Bhatia for nomination.

It is not for the first time that this critical care ambulance has failed to perform in condition of dire need. Last when in January the Nauchandi incident took place, when medicos were injured after a clash with police personnel, same failure happened.

Till Friday morning it was decided that Bhatia would be taken in KGMU’s ambulance only but the failure occurred just as the driver attempted to start it.
