Recent unfortunate incidents seem to have vitiated the atmosphere. We need to take urgent measures to address the peoples concern to prevent reversal of the gains of peace process, Sayeed said in a statement in Srinagar on Sunday.

Without referring to Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's statement defending security forces firing on protesters in Kupwara early this week, Sayeed said to protest and stage peaceful demonstrations are a democratic right of the people and needs to be respected. In our effort at nation building it is important we should carry along our people.

Two persons were killed at Zirhama-Kupwara and scores injured early this week when security forces opened fire on demonstrators protesting against the alleged desecration of a mosque and holy quran.

He said as a fundamental input to the peace process, PM's commitment needed to be followed up with action and a practical policy.

The former Chief Minister urged the PM to ensure that his assurance to curb human rights violations in the state is strictly adhered to and nobody is allowed to go against this commitment.
