Maheshwari alias Jeeva, who was arrested from Siraspur More on GT Karnal Road on Sunday, told police during interrogation that he had murdered Rai and six others at the behest of Ansari, an Independent MLA from Ghazipur, Deputy Commissioner of Police (special cell) Ajay Kumar told reporters in New Delhi.

He said the accused had not taken any money from Ansari but had carried out the killing "for a friend". Ansari is believed to have given Rs one lakh to Maheshwari for personal expenses in three instalments after the murder of Rai on November 29 last year.

Maheshwari, arrested under the Arms Act, was produced before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanjeev Jain who remanded him to seven days police custody.

Police said Maheshwari was involved in at least a dozen criminal cases of murder, attempt to murder kidnapping, robbery and Gangster Act.

He met Ansari, an MLA from Ghazipur in Mau district of Uttar Pradesh, in Lucknow jail, where he was lodged for the February 1997 murder of BJP MLA Brahm Dwivedi in Farrukhabad.

The duo had also allegedly conspired the murder of Congress leader Bhartendu Handa in connection with the auction of parking lots in Haridwar.

He had also been associated with Vijay Singh, an MLA from Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh.
