A doctor in the civic body-run Bhabha Hospital has been suspended for turning away a pregnant woman in labour during last week's doctors strike, which led to the lady giving birth in a taxi, officials said today.
Haridas Walke was the casualty medical officer on April 19 when the lady, Seema Bano, went to the hospital in suburban Bandra where she had registered to give birth.
However, since resident doctors and medical students were on strike, Walke and some nurses had allegedly turned away the woman, saying there was no one who could attend to her.
Bano, accompanied by her husband, then boarded a taxi and was travelling in search of a hospital when she delivered a baby girl in the vehicle without any medical assistance. She was later taken to a nursing home in Mahim.
"During the subsequent inquiry we interviewed the woman and the doctor who turned her away was identified. However, she was unable to positively identify the nurses," a senior official of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai said.
The civic body has also launched an inquiry against three nurses in the hospital for denying the lady treatment there.
