Mumbai Rly cops recover Rs 20 lakhs worth diamonds

The police recovered the diamonds from the residence of one of the accused on Saturday.

The crime branch of the railway police on has made a recovery of diamonds worth Rs 20 lakhs from the two persons arrested last week. The police recovered the diamonds from the residence of one of the accused on Saturday.

The police had arrested Nasir Sheikh alias Raja Kida (28) and Ashok Deshmukh alias Ashok Gharya (42) from their Bhiwandi residence on February 5. According to the police, in 2004 Sheikh and his associate Deshmukh had snatched a bag from a commuter's hand at Malad station. The bag contained diamonds worth Rs 35 lakhs and cash worth Rs 40,000.

The commuter, Prakash Shah (45), a diamond merchant from Malad has registered a case at the Borivali railway police and the investigation was on.

After a span of more than two years, the crime branch team nabbed Sheikh and Deshmukh.

"Sheikh and Deshmukh had sold the diamonds in three lots. We have got the diamonds that Sheikh had with him while the rest, which he has sold off to three others have to be recovered as yet", said a senior police official from Railway Crime Branch, Dadar.

Sheikh in his statement has agreed that he had snatched the bag from Shah's hand, however the police are still interrogating them about their other associates.

According to the police Sheikh, Deshmukh and their associate's function in a joint racket on all railway stations and are involved in bag lifting and snatching.
