After a series of specialty stores, Mumbai is now about to get its first specialty bar. This lounge-restaurant, which is currently in the process of being designed and constructed inside JW Marriott at Juhu, will be dedicated to gin for a change.
“We believe that this concept gives us the first mover advantage in what is currently a niche and untapped space,” says Gagandeep Singh, director of operations, JW Marriott Mumbai, talking about the currently-unnamed bar that will be located within the hotel premises. Incidentally, this news comes soon after one of the city’s oldest nightclubs, Enigma, which was the hotel’s in-house disco, shut shop a few months ago. It was known to attract an eclectic mix on weekends, but a ‘gin bar’ in comparison doesn’t sound as massy.
Explaining what brought this decision about, Singh says, “Gin is a fairly unexplored spirit within the domestic market. But its nature is versatile and it lends itself well to cocktails. We hope to convert many people and also hope that the gastronomically attuned appreciate this concept.” Apart from stocking over 30 varieties of international gin, the USP of the bar will be a ‘Gin and Tonic’ menu.
“That will be served up with a spicy twist, with the introduction of imported bitters, vermouth and Sherries,” says Singh, adding that they will also serve the usual suspects. “The focus is going to be on gin since it also makes for some very delicious cocktails, but other drinks too will be served.” An official announcement revealing the actual launch date of the “first-of-its-kind” bar will be made closer to its opening.
