Opposing the Ulema Council’s plan to field its candidates for the coming Lok Sabha polls in UP, two Muslim leaders on Wednesday said that floating a political party on religious lines would harm the secular fabric of the country.
“We had been opposing the likes of Ashok Singhal and Pravin Togadia for creating hatred in the name of religion and now the same is being proposed by certain Muslim leaders and this would ultimately harm the secular fabric of the country”, Niab Imam of Idgah and member of Muslim Personal Law Board, Khalid Rashid Firangimahli told PTI.
He was reacting to Ulema Council leader Tahir Madani’s recent announcement here that they would field candidates for Lok Sabha elections to throw out anti-community political parties out of power. Madani had claimed that Muslims would vote on the call of the Council.
Firangimahali said even the language used at the Ulema Council demonstration in the state capital last week was not befitting of a leader, who is claiming to be fighting for the cause of innocent people like the youths allegedly framed in “fake terror cases”.
“As of now, the communal atmosphere of the country is by and large peaceful but such utterances would only strengthen the fanatics and communal forces and we would not not be able to oppose them forcefully,” Firangimahli said.
