Chairman of Muslim League Massarat Aalam and his 16 party activists were detained in Srinagar on Tuesday while they were taking out a protest march, defying the prohibitory orders enforced in the city, official sources said.
Aalam and his 16 party activists were taken into preventive custody when they were heading towards the United Nations Military Observors Group (UNMOG) for India and Pakistan at Sonawar to submit a memorandum at the local office against the alleged custodial killing of two of their party cadre.
They said police used batons to disperse the protestors before detaining the League activists.
However, some of the party activists led by Mohammad Yousuf Mir managed to submit the memorandum, sources said.
League activists led by Aalam took out the march from Rajbagh party headquarters after a condolence meeting convened to pay tributes to district president Poonch Mushtaq Ahmad and his associate Abdul Rashid, who were killed by the Border Security Force at Rajpora area of Pulwama district on Thursday.

{{/usCountry}}Condemning the police action, a spokesman of Muslim League, which is a constituent of the hardline faction of hurriyat conference headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, alleged that 12 people including Aalam were injured in the lathicharge.
