Sonam Kapoor is one confident girl…something that’s evident as she addresses media with absolute panache, unperturbed by the volley of questions being hurled at her. And although her debut movie, Saawariya, didn’t do well, she’s in no mood to be ruled out. “I am not an underdog at all. I am Anil Kapoor’s daughter. I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth,” she said during a recent visit to the Capital.
Playing a Dilli di kudi in Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra’s upcoming, Delhi 6, she is kicked about the role. “Abhishek (Bachchan) and I look great together and have a chemistry that comes once in a life time,” she says. With the film’s promos already on air, the song, Masakali is generating a lot of buzz. She shares an anecdote, “Masakali is a bird in the film that’s symbolic of who I am” and adds, “ There was a shot in the movie that was planned with a pigeon on my shoulder. But it suddenly jumped on my head. Oh, it was great fun,” says the self-confessed animal lover.
The actress can’t stop raving about her dad’s performance in Slumdog Millionaire. “My dad’s performance was excellent,” she says. And even though industry giants have set the precedent for hosting the game show Kaun Banega Krorepati, she makes her choice clear - “... my dad is the best game show host,” she declares.
Having made her debut at the same time as actress Deepika Padukone makes comparisons inevitable. She admits that she was ‘quite upset’ when Deepika walked away with awards for best female debut last year. “Awards are important and it was important for me to win one for Saawariya. I was quite upset that I didn’t get the award,” she says.
However, she makes the distinction between their styles of working clear and maintains that she finds comparisons between the two unfair. “Deepika is mostly doing commercial roles while I’m not. I wouldn’t sign a film for an ornamental role or just to look pretty. Ek achhi film ban ne mein ek saal to lagta hi hai. That’s why I am being seen lesser than her,” she says.
