Nagaland government would release more than 50 people, held under the National Security Act, against whom serious criminal charges were not levelled, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, said today.

Replying to queries from opposition leader I Imkong, Chief Minister told the state Assembly that in keeping with the ongoing peace process, the Cabinet decided to release 30 NSCN (I-M) cadres, 26 NSCN (K) and one NNC (Federal) activist.

They are among a total 100 people detained under the NSA in the state.

The detenues are being released after their offences scrutinised by a Cabinet sub-committee headed by the Home Minister, he said.

The sub-committee had found that these deteneus were not involved in murder, kidnapping or extortion and they were political prisoners, the Chief Minister said adding that most of them had already completed their jail term.
