POLICEMEN used third-degree torture on a drug peddler burning his vital parts when he allegedly refused to cough up money demanded at the Naka police station.
The victim was picked up two days ago and was detained till Thursday noon. He narrated his woes to SSP Ashutosh Pandey in the evening. The SSP placed three constables under suspension, but not for torturing the complainant.
Pandey said it was the victim himself who had burnt self with his lighter and the cops were suspended for not frisking him while detaining him at the police station.
CO Qaiserbagh has been asked to probe into the matter.
Complainant Suraj Pandey, a resident of Mawaiya, Alambagh, stated in his complaint that four constables picked him up and took him to the Naka police station.
He alleged the cops, including the station house officer (SHO), sub-inspectors and a few constables, forced him to arrange Rs 50,000 as he was involved in selling smack in the area. Suraj said earlier he had been booked under the NDPS Act but now he was running a roadside readymade garment kiosk.
But, Suraj claimed, the cops forced him to own that he was engaged in drug trafficking. As he pleaded before the policemen that he was unable to arrange the money, they assaulted him mercilessly, Suraj alleged. He further said the cops even threatened to kill him in an encounter if he did not cough up the money.
Levelling allegations against the policemen, Suraj alleged as he did not admit to arrange the sum the copsburnt him on his chest and arms. The cops freed Suraj on Thursday noon when they failed to extort the money.
On the other hand, the press communiqué released from the SSP stated that constables Dhirendra Singh and Ashok Kumar Singh had caught Suraj from Talkatora tempo stand on May 16. The policemen were informed that Suraj was selling smack there. The SSP further stated that the duo locked him in the lock-up of the police station. To apply pressure on the cops Suraj lit his shirt causing burns on his chest and arms, SSP Pandey claimed.
The SSP further claimed that the policemen had not searched Suraj before putting him into the lock-up following which he carried the matchbox with him inside. Pandey said injured Suraj appeared before him on Thursday and he (the SSP) got him admitted to the Balrampur Hospital. Finding three policemen Dhirendra, Ashok and head constable Sarvesh Chandra Awasthi responsible for not searching Suraj at the police station he placed them under suspension, the SSP said.
The communiqué further stated that Suraj was a criminal and seven cases were registered against him at Alambagh and Naka police stations. Suraj’s wife Rukhsana was still lodged in the Lucknow district jail for selling smack, the SSP said.
