Nari Niketan to have more rooms

In an immediate measure to ease the problem of overcrowding at Nari Niketan here, the state government has decided to add three more spacious rooms in the premises.

In an immediate measure to ease the problem of overcrowding at Nari Niketan here, the state government has decided to add three more spacious rooms in the premises.

Vice chairperson of the Haryana State Commission for Women (SCW) Chander Prabha, who visited the shelter on Thursday evening, said that a sum of Rs 40 lakh would be spent on the expansion project.The construction work would be started soon, she said.

“The district administration had chalked out a detailed project and the state government has recently passed it. Under the plan three additional rooms will be constructed and all rooms will be sufficient to accommodate 60 inmates,” she said.

Nari Niketan is the only women shelter home which is run by the state government. It has a capacity of 25 inmates whereas presently 74 girls and women including mentally challenged individuals are staying at the shelter.

Following the recovery of bodies of two minors hanging from a pipe in the bathroom of the shelter home on Tuesday evening, the center has once again mired in to controversy.

Meanwhile, the subvidisional magistrate, Indri, Hema Sharma said that he had started a magisterial inquiry in to the aspects that led to the deaths of two inmates.“I will interview the victims’ parents, inmates and officials of Nari Niketan. The report will be submitted to the Karnal deputy commissioner Renu S Phulia soon,” she said.In the past, several inmates had escaped and a few even attempted suicide due to unknown reasons.
