Kalam and other top leaders, including Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Cabinet colleagues and Leader of Opposition LK Advani offered flowers at Gandhi's samadhi.

The three chiefs of the Armed Forces were also present on the occasion to pay homage to Gandhi on what is observed as 'Martyr's Day'.

The gathering, that included noted Gandhian Nirmala Deshpande, observed a two minutes' silence in memory of Gandhi.

Bhajans, including Gandhi's favourite devotional song Vaishnav Jan To, were played on the occasion.
