“Philosophy is seen as relevant by some students to enhance their career prospects while others think it increases rationality,” he said.

Prof Rao said that philosophy is a wisdom discipline. He said: “Other subjects give us knowledge and information but not necessarily wisdom.” He emphasised the need for philosophical activism in the present situation and reminded that Indian systems also can be creatively interpreted to encourage social responsibility and suppress egoistic individuality. He expressed his worry at the fragmentation in the world and expressed the need for inclusivism.

“Philosophically identity unites as well as alienates people, both. Identities have a cognitive as well as an emotional content. We need to promote common shared values and philosophers need to encourage the formation of these through activism,” he said while speaking at a lecture on relevance of philosophy.

The Chairman said that the UP government was morally obliged to support the Research Centre. He said that the state government should put in financial support also in the enlightened interest of UP. The Centre would soon then become a thriving centre of excellence, he said. The session was chaired by Prof Nirupma Srivastava, Head, Philosophy Department.

LU Notice: All the admit cards have been posted to the candidates for the NET examination to be held at Lucknow University Campus on December 17.
