MADHYA PRADESH Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) chairman Justice D M Dharmadhikari today said that human rights would not get due primacy in the society unless outmoded traditions and customs are jettisoned. To this end, he added, law alone can not change the situation and society too will have to change its thinking.
Delivering commencement day lecture at the National Law Institute University, Justice Dharmadhikari urged the students to work for this social transformation. Outlining the legal stresses that the oppressed masses face in India, the former Supreme Court judge said this is a challenge that lawyers and young law students must meet.
He called upon the students to take the idea of role of law to the remotest parts of India. And for this, he pointed out, there must be idealism and a spirit of sacrifice among the youth.
Contrasting the present day qualitative improvement in legal education with the dismal situation prevalent earlier, the MPHRC chairman said law schools must produce “good lawyers, good judges and good teachers” for the society.
Earlier in his welcome address, NLIU director Professor Balraj Chouhan said that human rights mean much more than legal rights.
Tracing historical development and evolution of human rights in the globe, he stressed that teaching human rights alone would not suffice. Unless spirit of human rights in internalised by the society, things would not improve, he added. As part of the university’s commitment to the society, the director also announced joint venture of NLIU and Gyanvani FM channel whereby a weekly programme would be broadcast educating people in rural Madhya Pradesh about their legal rights.
