Inaugurating the celebrations to mark the World Tourism Day at the CSJMU campus here on Wednesday Dr Katiyar said that people in general felt that tourism meant “journey to abroad”. They were correct in their viewpoint if they talked about international tourism, but visiting different states and places in one’s country was also tourism, precisely called domestic tourism.

He said the purpose of tourism was to create better understanding among people of different places and to know about the places and its people. He said countries like Japan Thailand, Singapore, Malasyia and several others had developed domestic tourism and had developed such infrastructure that attracted people from abroad despite the fact that these countries had very little which could be described as of historical importance and could be visited.

On the other hand, India had vast domestic and international tourism potential due to its historical richness and antiquities, but it lacked tourism business due to the absence of adequate facilities required by tourists and the attractive infrastructure, he said.

Referring to reports published in international journals of repute, he said, global community was of the view that India enjoyed great tourism potential and it would turn out to be the best tourist place of the world in near future.

He said since tourism had become an industry and it immensely contributed to the nation’s GDP the government and the citizens should think of the ways to promote it. He said it seemed ironical but it was true that going abroad was cheaper than going to different states in this country due to higher fare slabs.

He suggested that the government should consider providing a good infrastructure strengthening the communication system, ensuring competitive train and airfares and safety to the tourists.

Since the celebrations were organised by the students of MBA course at the university, the vice-chancellor advised them that they should draw up the strategies for promoting tourism industry in the country by popularising it through effective business techniques.
