The incident occurred when the driver of New Delhi-bound Neelanchal Express detected smoke coming out from the engine at 8.30 am.

Acting swiftly, the driver applied emergency brakes and stopped the train at Parsipur railway station in Bhadhoi district.

Reports said the driver of another train immediately rushed to the spot and helped the Neelanchal Express driver in detaching the engine from the train which by then had caught fire.

Engine driver Sharief (50) and assistant driver Mohi-u-din were reported injured in the fire. There was commotion everywhere at the railway station. Fire tenders were also rushed to the spot. Another engine was sent from Bhadhoi railway station and the train finally left at 11.15 am.

Traffic on the route remained suspended for over 2.30 hours. Leakage of fuel was stated to be the cause behind the fire. However, officials were yet to assess the causes. “We rushed to the spot but the train had by then left and we could not contact the driver”, assistant mechanical engineer AK Srivastava told HT on phone, adding, “passengers are safe”.
